What is Medicare?

Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older, certain people under 65 with disabilities, and people of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Your first chance to sign-up for Medicare usually starts 3 months before your 65th birthday and ends 3 months after your 65th birthday.

Basic Medicare includes two parts. Part A will cover most of your basic hospital (inpatient) and Part B will cover most of your doctor expenses (outpatient).

Unfortunately, "most" does not mean "all". There could be added expenses like Part A deductibles, Part B deductible, co-pays, co-insurance & basic Medicare does not cover dental, vision, hearing or prescription drug coverage.

How do you cover the "gaps" in original Medicare?

You can do nothing and keep original Medicare, self-insure, or purchase a Medicare Supplement plan.

What is Medicare Supplement Insurance (or Medigap Plan)?

Medicare Supplement Insurance helps fill "gaps" and pay some of the remaining health care costs not covered by original Medicare.

It is sold by private companies.

All 10 available Medicare Supplement Plans are standardized by Medicare - this means that each plan offers identical benefits, regardless of where you live or what company is handling your policy. The only difference is in price. And the best way to get the best price is to compare plans online and save!

Who is Eligible for Medicare Supplement Insurance?

If any of the following scenarios apply to you, then you are already guaranteed "eligible" to purchase Medicare supplemental insurance:

  • You are within 3 months of turning 65
  • You are currently covered under Medicare Parts A & B
  • If you are about to lose your group health insurance plan

*Please note that you may still be required to answer some medical questions about your overall health.

When Can I Sign Up for Medicare Supplement Insurance?

You can sign up for Medicare Supplement insurance at any time. However, there are a few "prime" time periods which will make the process simpler.

  1. The Initial Enrollment Period is from the month that you turn 65 and over the next 6 months of Part B coverage, your acceptance is guaranteed. Period.
  2. The Guaranteed Issue Period is the period when you are on the verge of losing coverage through an employer, then you will have a "guaranteed issue" period lasting 63 days where you can purchase a Medicare supplement policy with no health questions asked.
